Since the emergence of Instagram’s free photo filtering and sharing app, we have noticed a change in the colors web designers, fashion designers, product designers and stylists in every medium are gravitating toward.

Color tastes change all of the time, and they tend to happen as a social collective. You can almost tell the year something was brought to market by the shade of green that it is. What is interesting about this shift is that it is happening because of the way an app modifies color to suit the color replication of old film stocks like 1970’s Kodachrome, or 1980’s Fugicolor or the famous Polaroid Instamatics.

We grew up selling and using these film stocks. Thomas’ father was a photographer and he worked in a camera store. He showed him the tell-tale differences in stocks. He could tell the year; manufacturer and ISO of a film by looking at a print.

What interests us about this shift is that our new color pallet is coming to us from a technological leap forward that is delivering an historical filter on the present. Now that so much of our lives is seen in through a characterization of Kodak 400 C-41 process, Facebook Blue looks so dated.

Now, when you are out in the wild. look for red with a pink and orange undertone. Look for those earthy yellows. Look for greens that swing just slightly turquoise, tortoise-shell browns, not-quite blacks, and a little gold mixed into just about everything.

Creativium is more of a way than a thing. It cannot be mined or manufactured. It is design prowess in its purest form. Whether it is a great piece of inspiration, or a new way of thinking about something, or just a strong cup of coffee, Creativium is the name we have given to the undefinable energy in White Design Studio’s process. Without it, we could not create our award winning, distinctive, custom design solutions. Executive Briefing Centers demand inspiring, rigorous creative and White Design meets the challenge with its multidisciplined approach. Our passion lies in balancing multi-media, graphic and environmental design into one consistent, seamless, focused solution.

White Design travels to Santa Clara for the 2010 Spring ABPM Conference April 13-15. Peter is taking a prized piece of Creativium to demonstrate what makes White Design different.

I recently worked with White Design Studio to design an energy exhibition for the Eastern Kentucky Science Center. This program was a complicated by many factors. Our target audience was school-aged children and their teachers and parents. Our exhibition was funded by local and state energy industry. We had a very short time line with which to design the exhibition, and White Design Studio had to pick up where another firm had fallen short in their efforts to provide a cohesive solution.

White Design Studio was able to take a large, complex set of ideas and weave it together with an over arching brand and graphic language that told our stories clearly and concisely. The brand was emblematic of both the subject matter, and the sense of discovery we wanted our audience to feel. Just below the brand, White Design was able to show many of the principals our exhibition would demonstrate individually in a master narrative that governed the exhibit and gave the visitors a foundation for everything they were going to learn. Finally, individual exhibits were attractive, the lessons were clear and all of the demonstrations and aesthetics supported the main narrative.

White Design Studio was a pleasure to work with during the design process, taking input from our team of educators, administrators, industry professionals and adding their own research and perspective to make a learning tool that is informative and inspirational. In the end, both our guidance and theirs produced a solution that was far better than either of us could have produced on our own.

The centerpiece of this environmental branding project is a 3,000 pound steel sculpture of a molecule developed by the scientists at Battelle. It is a portion of a molecule for a material key to the production of Hydrogen Fuel Cells. We think of this object as the church steeple in a small town. It is visible from much of the first floor and second floor and serves to anchor the entire project. For us, it monumentalizes science but also the connections Battelle makes between disciplines, which is at the root of Battelle’s specific value as a business.

The patterns are made up of three elements. Squares, Circles and Hexagons. They are organized into streams, and within the streams, begin to align to local grids. Squares represent tables and frameworks for data. Circles represent atomic and molecular relationships. Hexagons speak to metallurgy and crystalline structures. These are all diagrams for scientific relationships and lenses through which we understand science.

From August 2009 through May 2010 I had the pleasure of working closely with Peter White in the design/development and manufacture of organizational equity concepts for Proctor & Gamble’s Product Supply Organization (PSO). PSO is a complex interconnected set of disciplines/functions which owns the core aspects of P&G’s supply chain operations and execution. White Design Studio’s was enlisted to create an over arching set of design elements which wove together these functions under the tag line of “Winning as 1”. Peter demonstrated great patience and insight as he developed an understanding of each function, their key work as well as expectations relative to “branding” the organization (several already had some level of work completed in this area). He provided a strong set of initial designs, collected feedback and quickly turned around revisions in order to meet the established deadline. The finished concepts (defined within P&G as Personality Expressions(PE)) met both the objective of “knitting the organizations together” as well as becoming quickly integrated into the ongoing identity of the functions and appear in much of their ongoing literature and presentation. Peter surrounded these PE with floor graphics and artwork which helped to further solidify the organizations under a common over arching set of design concepts. He also helped resolve a key issue within the organization by introducing new technology within the work areas to electronically capture team identify without re-creating the previous paper centric and cluttered surroundings which lacked the professional atmosphere needed.

On the whole White Design Studio exceeded our design expectations while demonstrating an ongoing propensity to meet aggressive deadlines. We will continue to use Peter and his team as opportunities arise and would gladly refer them to others doing like work.
